What happens when Zoom isn't cutting it? I have found that using Zoom for lessons does have many benefits, however, it doesn't work for every student. You turn on "Original Sound for Musicians" on both the audio settings and the top corner button but no difference. If the teacher and student both have Facetime, this is an excellent alternative! Sound quality is great, you can also use a second camera angle with another device, and share screen is an option. Let's dive in on how to set up! #Facetime #facetimelessons #onlinepianolessons
For Teachers:
You can use both your MacBook and IPhone. The Macbook will be in front of you or off to the side while the Iphone will show the keyboard view from above. If you need a phone stand, here is the link.
Click "New Facetime" on the left side of the screen. I Facetime my phone by typing in my phone number to call. Take note: make sure your Facetime settings for the MacBook and IPhone are set to separate accounts (one using the phone number and the other using your email). I answer the Facetime call on my phone and press the Mute button as well as lower the volume all the way down. (This will prevent an echo!)
Set the Iphone at your desired height and angle above the keys and click on the bottom left icon. Next, click on "Add People." Call your student through their email and/or phone number.
For Students:
A laptop can be enough for Facetime lessons, as long as you have a proper side angle. However, I highly recommend having two devices on the Facetime call. Your IPhone can be placed overhead showing your whole keyboard or at an elevated side angle. This allows your teacher to have a better view of both your hands on the keyboard. An IPad or laptop in front of you allows for easy viewing of your teacher's demonstrations. If you need a phone stand, here is the link. These above steps can be repeated for setup on your end, minus the calling part.
